Armila - Artist Residency
In 2019 I travelled to Guna Yala, Panama, to a remote Indigenous community in Armila.
For 3 weeks I stayed with 6 artists in a house built by the community, shared meals with a local family, learnt about Guna history and cultural practices, and researched new work.
Due to the remote location of the community, I sourced local materials to make with. One of which was plastic; washed up on the beach in copious amounts, threatening the entire ecosystem.
The work I made became a combination of natural material and soft plastic - fused, stitched, wrapped and woven into plant material, and placed back into the environment from where it all came.
